“Stay true to yourself. Don’t follow trends, they will fade. Do what you believe in! Dream Explore Discover the world you live in.”

About the print: I chose the phrase “Dream Explore Discover” because of its powerful message. I liked the idea of seeing the world through the eyes of a newborn, who is discovering so many things for the first time. We all should do that more often! Unfortunately it’s something that gets lost while growing up, so it’s good to remind ourselves.

About the artist: Thomas Gabriel is a type and graphic designer living in Vienna, Austria. After studying graphic and communication design in Vienna, he studied abroad in the Netherlands at the Royal Academy of Art, graduating with a masters in Typeface Design in 2007. In 2008, he co-founded Typejockeys.

Name: Thomas Gabriel

Place you live: Vienna, Austria

Occupation: Type and graphic designer.

Preoccupation: Drawing and using letterforms.

Tell us how you created your illustration: I wanted to create something colorful and play a bit with different lettering styles, reflecting the different emphasis of the words. It was a great way to improve on new letter shapes. But most importantly I tried to have fun while doing it.

What do you love about illustration? The freedom of visualizing messages on a very personal level without having to struggle too much with clients.

How do you see illustration changing in the next 10 years? I don’t see myself as an illustrator, rather as a designer and lettering artist who uses different ways to visualize content. I think the borders of one’s expertise are becoming  more blurred as the years go on. Illustrators now do lettering, graphic designers do illustration, and web designers do interface designs. Everything will mix, which will lead to new interesting ideas.

Who are three of your favorite illustrators right now? There are a lot of people who I admire in the field of type design. Personally, I find inspiration everywhere. I’m a very visual person, so everything around me influences every new project I do.
