Architecture by Nick Dewald in Cincinnati

Nick Dewald has an eye for architecture. It is, after all, his profession. Check out how he highlights some of Cincinnati’s historic buildings, and be sure to follow him on Instagram here: @nickdewald

Name:Nick Dewald

Place you live:  Cincinnati, Ohio

Occupation:  Architect/Developer

Preoccupation: My two daughters and running The City Flea with my wife Lindsay.

Place your Instagrams were taken?  In or near the Over-the-Rhine neighborhood of Cincinnati, Ohio.

Can you sum up the place you live?  Over-the-Rhine is currently serving as the heart of the city.  It is where you bring out-of-town guests, go to find a nice meal, and take photos of unique architecture.  It has an incredibly diverse history and is jammed with charm.

What is a perfect day in Cincinnati?  I am lucky enough to live and work within a few blocks and the nature of my work is exclusively focused on the same basic area.  The fact that I get to go through life on foot and bike on a daily basis is pretty darn perfect.

If Cincinnati was a person who would it be?  Alexander Hamilton – someone who’s greatest day took place over a hundred years ago but who has recently come back into the spotlight in a new light.  The identity and personality of Hamilton has been reinvented (of course, thanks to Lin Manuel Miranda) yet the structure of his identity is built on facts and history that we can only read about.  Similarly, Cincinnati has a storied past that it’s recently reinvented character is strengthened by and dependent upon.

Do you shoot with your phone or other cameras or both?  While I do have a full frame camera that I use a decent amount, my Instagram shots are almost exclusively taken with my iPhone.

What is your editing process?  As Instagram has expanded the in-app editing options, I find myself just staying within that platform to edit.  Sometimes I use VSCO and SKRWT, depending on the shot.

Can you give a couple tips to aspiring Instagram photographers?  Even if you are into taking photos of buildings, you don’t have to live in a metropolis like NYC or Hong Kong to find interesting material to photograph on a consistent basis.  I’ve continued to find interesting details and views of the same small territory over the years.

Who are your three favorite photographers?  I’ve always loved Dan ColeKonrad Langer, and Matthias Heiderich.

What is the most amazing travel experience you’ve ever had?  Definitely visiting Therme Vals in Switzerland.  It is a gorgeous location and the thermal bathhouse itself, designed by Peter Zumthor, is a work of art.  For nature lovers, architecture geeks, or anyone who likes a good soak, this is worth the trip.

Local tip:

Cincinnati is a real life city consisting of many charming neighborhoods but the center city is fairly compact thanks to our many hills and the mighty Ohio River.  Park somewhere convenient and then explore the city using our bike share or new streetcar (or just walk).
