Caffeinated Cultivation by Kate Davis in Melbourne, Australia

Melbourne is very alive and there is something weird and wonderful happening in every nook and cranny of this city.

Name:Kate Davis
Occupation:

Artist, photographer, educator, gallery attendant

Preoccupation:

Books! I buy them faster than I can read them. I just had to buy a new bookcase.

Tell us about Melbourne:

Everywhere you go there is delicious food, coffee and beer within your reach. As a city, Melbourne really embraces and nurtures the arts. There is also a focus on sustainable living and there is an incredible network of bike tracks and community gardens, even throughout the Central Business District.

A perfect day?

Sleeping in, a bike ride, a strong coffee, a bacon and egg roll, a nice sunny spot in the park, good friends, music, afternoon beers.

What is the best thing about Melbourne?

The people, coffee, art galleries, music, parks and the bike lanes.

What is the worst?

I grew up in Sydney and I will admit I miss Sydney’s beaches.

What would be surprising about Melbourne to an outsider?

We have really unpredictable weather year round and it is pretty standard to experience four seasons in one day.

If Melbourne was a person or character who would it be?

Someone wacky, yet strangely beautiful.

Who are three of your favorite artists?

It’s impossible to pick only three, I am currently obsessed with contemporary Chinese art, I love it all!

Local Tip:

No one in Australia actually drinks Fosters.

Must Do:

Drink five coffees, go to the arts precinct, visit The National Gallery of Victoria, Federation Square, Australian Centre for the Moving Image, get a drink at Ponyfish Island and then make your way through the city via Hosier Lane, Degraves St and any other street art adorned arcade that takes your fancy. Topping this off with a beer at Rooftop would be pretty Melbourne.
