Place your Instagrams were taken? Amsterdam

Can you sum up Amsterdam? I love living in this city because of the historical part as well as the lively creative community. There’s always something interesting happening, whether you’re in the mood for an art or photography expo, a cool pop up store or a coffee in one of the new espresso bars.

What is a perfect day in Amsterdam? A perfect day would be an early ride on our bikes to the Jordaan area, visiting the organic market for fresh fruit and vegetables, have a coffee at our favourite coffee bar Headfirst Coffee Roasters and buy artisan French bread at Gebroeders Niemeijer. We always love a good movie in one of the small theatres or a nice expo at Foam Photography Museum. In the evening a good pizza with friends at Sotto and drinks at Cafe Brecht.

If Amsterdam was a person or character who would it be and why? David Lynch: inspiring, mysterious, weird, cool and a bit raw on the edges.

How long have you been using Instagram? Since the launch in 2010.

Do you shoot with your phone or other cameras or both? For Instagram I mainly use my iPhone, less than 1% is DSLR. I only do DSLR now and then to promote new work on our blog.

What is your editing process? I use the iPhone cam to shoot a photo and edit in VSCO cam.

Do you create images outside of Instagram? Yes, I’m a professional lifestyle and travel photographer, so I often do editorial or commercial work.

Has Instagram/phoneography affected how you shoot? Definitely! In fact, Instagram made me realize I love photography so much, so I decided to study photography. I’m a professional photographer and co-founder of my photography business together with my husband Andres.

Can you give a couple tips to aspiring Instagram photographers? It really helps if you try to look at the world around you from a different perspective. Look for interesting details and shapes, try different angles. Just experiment with styles and editing, try to find a look and feel you like and stick with it. The most interesting profiles on IG have a coherent style with interesting and beautiful aesthetics.

Who are your three favorite Instagrammers? This is such a difficult question, as I have many favourites! But if I can only choose three I would say @visualmemories_, @helloemilie, @kirstinmckee

Best outdoor activity:

Exploring the city by foot or bicycle.

Must do:

Take your bicycle on the ferry to Durgerdam, a very cute and picturesque village in the north of Amsterdam. The bike ride along the water is beautiful and it has a rural feel yet still so close to the city.

Local tip:

Every year in June you can walk a route in the historical center of Amsterdam and visit the beautiful gardens of the canal houses. It’s a unique chance to experience the green oasis in the middle of this city.
