#liminal, Iceland in Iceland
Photographer, filmmaker and artist Joshua Zucker-Pluda is based in New York City, but you wouldn’t know it from his Instagram feed. His photos boast incredibly simple landscapes with rich color, soft texture and depth. Be sure to follow Joshua’s beautiful Instagram feed here – guaranteed to make you drool.
Place you live: New York City
Place these Instagrams were taken? Iceland
Can you sum up the place you live? NYC: Complicated – Iceland: Unreal
If your city was a person or character who would it be? The Icelandic landscape is it’s own character, doesn’t need to be anything else. BUT – maybe Clint Eastwood’s Man-With-No Name. Quiet and powerful.
How long have you been using Instagram? Since August ’12
What phone camera do you use to shoot with? When I shoot with my phone, it’s an Iphone 5. But there’s a lot of SLR in there.
What is your editing process? Really simple – I don’t like a lot of trickery. No comping or special effects. I just color correct and crop. Occasionally I’ll add some Mextures to add depth.
Do you create images outside of Instagram? Yes – I’m a filmmaker and a photographer.
Has Instagram/phoneography affected how you shoot? Most definitely – it’s kind of become a journal or sketchbook, a way for me to work out ideas – but I also have a giant archive of images, and this gives me a way to let photos that wouldn’t normally be seen have a second kind of life…
Can you give a couple tips to aspiring Instagram photographers? Never underestimate sincerity. Don’t follow trends, find your own voice.
Who are your three favorite Instagrammers? Too many good ones to name – but three people who really personify what I said above: Jill Beale (@fakepolaroidsfrommyphone), Owen Perry (@Circa_1983), Kava Gorna (@kavaberries). They’re also all really great photographers outside of IG.
I’d also like to call attention to Julian Calverley (@jccalverley). He’s one of my favorite photographers on Instagram, but he dropped out of sight for a while. He’s just signed on recently with a new account and I’d love to give him a shout out in addition to the other three I listed.
