Moors by Matt Lief Anderson in Stoke Beach, Devon, England, UK

Exeter is a small University town in Devon. Everyone knows each other and is willing to have a chat over a pint or two. Thanks to the University it has a relatively high population but it feels like a tiny village that time forgot. I wake up every day and see goats grazing outside my apartment on the grass of endless green rolling hills. I spend my time in these hills that the locals call moors, as well as cycling to the nearby beaches like Stoke where I took this series. Nature is extremely accessible in Exeter.

currently traveling… obsessively drinking coffee… writing music… camping… motorcycle riding…

Tell us about the place you live:

Devon is full of 100 year old pubs, sheep, rolling hills, endless mind-blowing coastline, and too many rivers and streams to count. It’s the kind of place that has a hip coffee scene where local artists and musicians sit happily with little old ladies drinking Earl Grey.

A perfect day?

Wake up and ride my bike to my favorite coffee spot where my friends work, and enjoy a flat white of some Single Origin Monmouth Coffee, grab a beer at the local pub and finish the night on a rooftop with a bottle of Monkey 47 and a few friends with guitars.

What is the best thing about your spot?

It’s still a secret. I was a little worried about doing a nude photo shoot with a local model, but no one ever appeared. You have to climb over a giant rock or around it during high tide. Apparently people aren’t adventurous enough to explore the area.

What is the worst?

It’s always raining in Devon.

What would be surprising about this place to an outsider?

I was an outsider. An American who was living in England. I was surprised at the conversations I had with complete strangers. Americans keep to themselves more. The English like to have a chat and make fun of themselves. People don’t take themselves so damn seriously like the rest of the world.

Before I die I want to visit:

I have been traveling and living away from America for four years now. I’m currently on my way to the Arctic Circle with two other photographers. Alaska has been a place I’ve always wanted to visit. I can’t wait. I’ll also probably make my way back to Asia to hit up Mongolia soon. That’s also at the top of my list.

Who are three of your favorite artists?

Luke Byrne, Randy P Martin, and Reuben Wu

Favorite place to eat:

I love cooking and my friends are chefs. Our potlucks are better than any restaurant I can afford.

Favorite place to drink:

The Exploding Bakery has the best coffee in Devon. And two of my favorite people work there. I spend every morning in that cafe. The best bar is The Bike Shed where my other two best friends are bartenders. They’ll make you an excellent Negroni. If I have a car at my disposal, I would go to The Bridge in Topsham. It’s a proper pub. The only bar the Queen has ever visited.

Favorite shop:

The farmer’s market

Local Tip:

Go to Ottery St Mary to the Tar Barrel Festival. I can’t believe it’s legal.

Must Do:

Hit the moors and the coast. Bring a bottle of wine and a blanket.
