Can you tell us something about you that most people don’t know? My 9-5 job is designing children’s books for a big publishing house. I get to lay out the pages, work with authors and illustrators, and pick all the materials that make the books look, well, like books! One of my favorite parts of the job is choosing all the little bits that make a project unique – like the page thickness, endpaper color, or special laminations on the cover.

What is your favorite thing about photography? Dorothea Lange said: “A camera is a tool for learning how to see without a camera.” Don’t you just friggin’ love that? Because that’s EXACTLY how it works. Once you start taking photos quite often, it’s almost like a little switch flips somewhere in your skull, and your eyes turn into little shutters.

Can you offer a few pieces of advice to aspiring photographers? Shoot shoot shoot all the time. “Your first 10,000 photos are your worst.” —Henri Cartier-Bresson

What is the theme of your limited edition photo album? “Just a little bit of magic.”

Why did you choose that theme? I’m on a quote run here so how about another? This one from my teacher Milton Glaser is my absolute favorite: “There are three responses to a piece of design—yes, no, and WOW! Wow is the one to aim for.” I try to insert something magical into all of my photographs, because magic always provides that WOW reaction, even if it’s just a little bit of magic.

What was the experience like working with MyPublisher to create your album? Quite lovely and easy. As I said, I do so love to pick book materials, and MyPublisher made it very simple and fast to choose from a wide range of samples. The interface was also extremely pleasing, with large images of what the album would look like each step of the way.

What was your reaction to seeing your photography in a book as opposed to online? You know, I’ve actually never seen any of these images in print before! They look rad. Especially on these lay-flat pages, which allow for images in the middle of the book to not be eaten up by the gutter.

What was your impression of the premium photo album MyPublisher produced for you? I am especially pleased with the inset photo on the soft glove-leather cover, and I just want to run my hands over this book and smell the pages. Have you smelled this thing? It smells awesome. Like libraries and riding boots. The album also came in a lovely matching protective box that rounds out the whole package beautifully.

City:

I just moved to NYC!

Local tip?

It takes WAY longer to walk across the brooklyn bridge than you think it will.

If someone was visiting what must they do?

Take the Staten Island Ferry at sunset. The view of the city and of Miss Liberty are more than worth it.

Best place to eat?

So far I’m pretty addicted to the Coffee Shop salads in Union Square, and I can’t get enough of the pretzel mustard at Frankies Prime Meats.

Best place to shop?

Find a secret Everlane popup event, or stop by Purl Soho and become addicted to obscure Japanese needlepoint.

Can you sum up NYC?

Exhausting and slightly gross, but also totally delightful. I got spit on the first week here, but as I was receiving the aforementioned spittle, I got the most beautiful shot down Lexington in the rain. So, I say it was a wash!
