Pal’s by Tammy Mercure in Johnson City, Tennessee, USA

This image was taken at one of the iconic Pal’s restaurants that pop up around the Tri-Cities. The buildings are all turquoise and have giant hot dogs and fries sitting atop. Pal’s famous sweet tea can be seen in the hands of many residents throughout the day.

Can you sum up Bristol? Bristol is a small town nestled in the hills of East Tennessee. It is filled with fairly quiet, mostly passionate people.

Occupation: Photographer

Preoccupation: bull riding, driving fast, and fighting

A perfect day in Tennessee? Any day with a great event, like Easter egg hunting in the park or a NASCAR race or bull riding.

If someone was visiting, what must they do? One of the most unique things is about an hour away. The Carter Family is from this area and they still run the Carter Family Fold, a music venue that has a band and dancing every Saturday night.

A perfect meal? I’m partial to dining outside, so I would recommend 620 State for sushi or a burger and Shelbee’s cupcakes for dessert.

What is the best thing about your spot? The milkshakes and the thought of the day. Each day the sign outside the restaurant has an inspirational message, like “Strive for wisdom.”

What is the worst? They want you to call their fries “Frenchie Fries”.

A little known fact about where you live? There is a little studio here called Classic that has “Elvis’ magical mixing board”. It is the reason that Johnny Cash often came to record in Bristol.

Who are your three favorite photographers? Roger Ballen, Charlie White, and Zak Arctander
