Retro Fish by Grégory Mignard in Brest, France

When I ordered my new retro fish, I asked the Wicked Surfboards shaper if I could take some pictures of its production. The dark atmosphere is soothing to photograph. His studio is located in one of the surf shops of the city, close to the surf spots.

Name:Grégory Mignard

Place you live: Brest, Brittany in France

Place your photo was taken: Brest, France, in the shape-room of Wicked Surfboards.

Can you sum up Brest? Brest is the last big city on the Brittany West Coast in France. Located in a sheltered position not far from the western tip of the Breton peninsula, and the western extremity of metropolitan France. This land is often rainy and cloudy but life near Celtic sea is magical. A lot of surfers and artists live in Brest.

Occupation: Photographer and computer specialist

Preoccupation: Surfing, traveling and chilling with my girlfriend

What is a perfect day at Brest? It is a day of autumn or spring, the light is so much better. Start my day just before the sun rises and discover a blue sky with some clouds and from my car with a surfboard and a camera to my favorite spot for a day surfing the waves and capture and return when the local sunset.

If someone was visiting, what must they do? Go to the island of Ouessant, surf waves in Crozon peninsula, eat local pancakes, drink beer in town and cross the Recouvrance bridge.

A perfect meal in Brest? It’s “Galette Bretonne”, a french local pancake at Ty Gwechall, a very old local house near Brest.

What is the best thing about your spot? The weather changes very quickly and there are hugely quiet spots to surf.

What is the worst? A rainy day!

A little known fact about where you live? Brittany is often criticized for its rain, but this is not true, it can not be that much 😉

Where is your favorite place in the world? The next place I’ll visit.

Who are your three favorite photographers? Chris Burkard is my favorite photographer but I also like the work of James Bowden and Morgan Maassen.
