Trees and Football by Lan Truong in Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA

Ann Arbor has a ton of trees and is big on football.

Name:Lan Truong

Place you live: Brooklyn, New York (I went to college in Ann Arbor)

Place your postcard is designed for: Ann Arbor, Michigan

Can you sum up Ann Arbor? Ann Arbor’s a cool city with nice people and great food. It’s home to the University of Michigan, where football is very big (GO BLUE!).

Occupation: Illustrator and Graphic Designer

Preoccupation: Food, of course!

A perfect day in Ann Arbor? Spend some time walking in Nicholas Arboretum (or “The Arb” as it’s so lovingly called by University of Michigan students and Ann Arbor residents), or rent a canoe and spend a lazy afternoon drifting down the Huron River. Grab a bite to eat at one of the many restaurants on Main St. (Real Seafood Company is good, but a bit pricey) or in Ann Arbor’s historic Kerrytown district (the bibimbap at Kosmo’s is amazing and cheap). Main St. and Kerrytown are also filled with quirky shops, so hit up a few of them after eating (Carol Roeda Studio on Main St. has awesome gifts, and Treasure Mart is a fabulous consignment shop in Kerrytown). End your day by catching a flick at the Michigan Theater or the State Theater, which are less than a block from each other and a quick walk from Main St. and Kerrytown. One of the best things about Ann Arbor is that you don’t need a car to get around. You can walk everywhere, or take public transportation if your feet start to hurt. Beware though, Ann Arbor is a college town; so if you’re out late, you’ll definitely see some drunk college students stumbling about.

If someone was visiting, what must they do? Check out Mark’s Carts, Ann Arbor’s food cart courtyard.

A perfect meal in Ann Arbor? A sandwich from Zingerman’s or Cafe Habana.

What is the best thing about Ann Arbor? You don’t need a car to get around.

And the worst? It starts to feel small after living there for a bit.

A little known fact about where you live? Madonna went to school at the University of Michigan for a couple of years before dropping out and moving to New York.

Where is your favorite place in the world? Sitting in The Arb, with my bare feet in the Huron River.

Who are your three favorite designers/illustrators? Ah, there are too many to name! I draw inspiration from illustrations on old matchbooks and postcards.
